Engines and Electric Drives

We are Beta Marine and Oceanvolt agents and have been at the forefront of fitting electric drives to a variety of boats.

Back in 2010 we fitted a hybrid engine to our ‘green’ Contessa 32 ‘Calypso’ and since then have had a steady stream of customers enquiring about fitting electric drives to their boats.

For many boats the convenience and potential power output of a conventional diesel is still the preferred option for auxillary power but others are willing sacrifice range for the simplicity and pleasure of going electric.

One such boat was a Marieholm Folkboat which we fitted with a 3 kW system with a Lithium ion battery bank giving the customer a range of around 20 nm and the ability to motor at up to 5 knots.

Although the initial cost is higher than a diesel installation advantages include no annual maintenance and a better distribution of weight as batteries can be moved forward and kept low.

Other electric drive systems include fitting an electric drive into a Tofinou 7 day boat, installing a 8 kW drive into a Carter 33 incorporating a small petrol generator for charging on passage and fitting a larger system incorporating one diesel and one electric drive in a 51ft  Najad destined for long distance cruising.

All of our electric systems are supplied by the Finnish company Oceanvolt for whom we are a UK agent.
